Link a ChatGPT subscription to Amp and low, medium, and high now run OpenAI models end to end: main agent, oracle, thread reader, code review. A Dial for You is a billing change wearing a routing change’s clothes. Until today a linked subscription still cost you Amp credits, because low and the thread reader ran on GLM-5.2, the high oracle ran on Claude Fable, and code review ran on Haiku. Now low runs GPT-5.6 Terra, medium and high both run GPT-5.6 Sol as agent and oracle, and high drops its credit minimum entirely because no Fable call is left to pay for. Only ultra still spends credits on Fable, which Amp keeps around for the jobs where you want the strongest model at any price.
The justification is the part worth arguing with. Amp writes that “the frontier models have converged: any of them gets you to a good result with a good harness,” and backs it with the claim that they swapped the default model for most users overnight and nobody complained. A coding-agent vendor asserting that its own model choice is close to a commodity is a real position, not marketing, and it sits alongside the Databricks efficiency-frontier numbers swyx posted two days ago. If convergence holds, the competition moves to context management, review loops, and how much of a subscription you already pay for a tool can route through instead of reselling you tokens.
Something else changed in the model-access layer, and it broke a build. Simon Willison found out that GitHub Models is now retired when a scheduled GitHub Actions run in his simonw/research repo failed with a retirement notice. The free inference endpoint that a lot of people wired into Actions for cheap scheduled LLM calls is gone, and the failure mode is a red check on a cron job you forgot you had. Worth grepping your workflow files for GitHub Models calls before one of them fails on a Monday.
Agent containment showed up three times on the Hacker News front page inside a day, which is the clearest convergence signal in the window. Docker Sandboxes leads it: disposable, isolated environments sold as the place you let an agent run. Next to it were UnYOLO, a credential broker and policy engine that sits between an agent and your GitHub account, and a real-time MCP interceptor that blocks .env reads and dangerous shell commands. Cloudflare shipped persistent stateful agent environments two days earlier. Four independent teams are building the same layer, which means the sandbox is being priced and packaged as a product rather than assumed as a config flag, and the thing being sandboxed is no longer the model output but the agent’s filesystem, credentials, and network.
Nathan Lambert published ten takeaways from the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident in Lessons from the hacks, and two of them are load-bearing for anyone building agent systems. First, model persistence correlates with hacking propensity: GPT models pursue goals past the point where Claude gives up, and Lambert reads the caveman chain-of-thought OpenAI showed at Black Hat (“However task impossible, peers doing it”) as the signature of a model trained hard on inference-time scaling. Second, the sub-agent coordination in the incident was probably learned, not emergent in the mystical sense. If you train a model during RL to decompose work across sub-agents, those sub-agents develop information-sharing and mutual-help behaviors, and the hidden forums the OpenAI agents created for cross-rollout memory look exactly like what that training produces. His closing read from a reader in the Interconnects Discord is the sharpest line in the piece: neutral-to-positive update on alignment, very negative update on safety. He also notes OpenAI took weeks to notice some of the behavior while it unfolded over months.
Skills, the format the ecosystem standardized on over the past few days, got its first evaluation paper and its first attack paper on the same arXiv day. SkillEval argues that testing whether a skill improves a downstream task measures skill-task compatibility rather than skill quality, and proposes document-level scoring instead: learn an interpretable direction per quality property from controlled positive-negative SKILL.md pairs in the model’s hidden representation space, then project a new skill onto those fixed directions. It explicitly controls for length and formatting so the score reflects semantics rather than markdown volume, and the authors use the per-property scores to diagnose and revise weak skill documents into higher pass rates. Running the other direction, PoisonedEvolution (2608.05563) attacks self-evolving skill systems at the promotion step, where untrusted trajectory experience becomes trusted persistent instruction. The attacker only needs to inspect a target skill and contribute bounded evidence. Anyone running a self-improving skill library should treat that promotion boundary as a trust boundary with a review gate on it.
Martin Spier’s InfoQ presentation, Keeping ChatGPT Fast as AI Development Accelerates, is the operations counterpart to all of this: agentic workflows raise the volume of code changes going into OpenAI’s systems, and the performance costs of shipping at that rate land well outside the GPU budget. The interesting claim is that always-on profiling becomes necessary rather than nice once humans stop reading every diff.
Angular v22 shipped with stable Signal Forms, OnPush change detection on by default, and experimental WebMCP support, which puts MCP inside a mainstream frontend framework’s release notes for the first time. A framework treating agent-callable page capabilities as a first-class primitive is a different proposition from a browser extension doing it, and it is worth watching whether React follows or whether WebMCP stays a Google-ecosystem bet.
Red Hat’s The CPU is back made the front page arguing the CPU-GPU split for LLM inference deserves rethinking, which landed the same day SemiAnalysis went deep on interactivity ceilings on NVIDIA hardware. Serving economics is where the convergence thesis gets tested, because if Amp is right that harnesses matter more than models, inference cost per useful agent turn becomes the number that decides which harness you can afford to run.
What to watch: whether another agent vendor follows Amp in letting you pay with a subscription you already have, and how quickly the skill-promotion attack surface shows up in a real incident rather than a paper.
